Yes. It is real. I've been to multiple sites, including BMW's where they all refer to his work. It is real.

It's funny you mention that, the guy that made that robot said he got offers for help that "ethically they involved applications that I'm not comfortable with." which to me implies they were sinister in nature, i.e. government military applications. He's stated that "I want r50rs available to local governments for transportation safety." so don't go jumping to the mech army conclusions JUST yet, at least not with THIS guy's robot.
