Ok... So I'm sure some of you remember Hero Online and how kewl a game it was, at first anyway. But there were too many things wrong with it. No character customization, limited weapon selection, not-so-great graphix, etc. Well I'd like to point you in the direction of 9Dragons by Acclaim. 9Dragons is everything that Hero Online SHOULD have been. Several different styles of martial arts per weapon, per clan and six clans to choose from. There's Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Drunken Boxing, and some styles that borrow from known styles and made their own. The graphix and animations rock ass. And above all of this, the game is free to DL and play, forever. I'll break down the clans for you...
Shaolin
www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_kiZQaE7KA
Male only martial arts monestary. Shaolin use fist and foot weapons, staffs, and bladed staff weapons with multiple fighting styles for each. The video is not actual game graphix, but the animations are exactly what is used in-game. In-game Shaolin action here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3zLWbA28-U Info on their martial arts here: phpbb.acclaim.com/9dragons/viewtopic.php?t=10113&sid=9B132B942107EEB792344A3428D28E4E
League of Beggars
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSEUN6hS4MY
Male and female league of outcasts. The League of Beggars use fist and foot weapons in Drunken Boxing, full staff and half staff weapons with multiple styles for each. There choice of attire, as you can see, is rather haphazardly thrown together. Martial arts style info: phpbb.acclaim.com/9dragons/viewtopic.php?t=10136&sid=9B132B942107EEB792344A3428D28E4E
Sacred Flower
www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1AHDSTP758
Female only group of assassins. They use fist and foot, dagger and bladed hoop/chakra type weapons with multiple styles for each. They are very fast and also use Chi Kung in their style (the games type of magic, using your 'Vital Energy' or Chi Energy or Mana, if you prefer, to do damage from afar). Wu-Tang Clan (ain't nothing to fuck with)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3yxOzej4do
Male and female, I believe. Fist and foot, saber and blade weapons. Very fluid movements of Tai Chi style. Martial arts info: phpbb.acclaim.com/9dragons/viewtopic.php?t=10127&sid=9B132B942107EEB792344A3428D28E4E
Heavenly Demon
www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3KphJa-2DM
Male and female brutally evil clan. Fist and foot, blade and more weapons. Their fist and foot martial arts style is called Bloody Hands technique, the most deadly combat system ever conceived, which ranges from Bloody Hands of Shadow to Bloody Hands of Massacre. More here: phpbb.acclaim.com/9dragons/viewtopic.php?t=10165&sid=9B132B942107EEB792344A3428D28E4E
Brotherhood of Thieves
www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFCYFPWOGtU
Male and female, I believe. Fist and foot, and spear weapons, mostly. Martial arts info: phpbb.acclaim.com/9dragons/viewtopic.php?t=10146&sid=9B132B942107EEB792344A3428D28E4E
Those are the six readily available clans at the beginning of the game, but there are three more clans that I think are NPC clans. They are...
Black Dragon Clan
Disciples of Iron Fist
The Union of Noble Families
Some of the clans are hostile towards other clans, and allied with yet other clans. Each clan has their own meditation animations and effects, and multiple meditations to use granting different effects. Meditation works almost identically to Hero in that it heals life and vital energy, but not internal wounds. There's also something in the game called rage that builds as you fight and I'm told you can use it to invoke a berserk state in yourself and increase your damage output. Leveling works about the same as Hero. There are multiple tiers of levels, which are further divided by Chengs. 12 Chengs per tier. Once you have maxed your current tier and gain enough experience to advance to the next, you must complete a special Chi Breathing (meditation) exercise unlocking chakras of your body using the buttons on your mouse. Also, once you learn a new martial arts style or Chi Kung technique, you must train yourself how to use it before you can employ it in the field. In the case of a new martial arts style, you use a training dummy which will show you a preview of the first three moves in the combo of that style. Now what i mean by that is, let's say you learn Shaolin's first style called Basic Buhdda's Fist. It starts at Cheng (level) 1 which only has one move in it's combo sequence. At Cheng 3 you will unlock the second fluid move in that styles combo. At Cheng 5, the third and so on. Also each style you decide to use in combat grants bonus damage per hit which goes up as you gain Chengs in that style.
It may sound complicated, but it's pretty simple and awesome once you see it in-game. The game homepage is at: 9dragons.acclaim.com/ and the info for everything game related is on the forums at: phpbb.acclaim.com/9dragons/index.php?sid=9B132B942107EEB792344A3428D28E4E
I currently have a Cheng 5 Gathering Chi (total level 17) Shaolin Monk named Jin Fei-Hung. Drop in if you want some real martial arts MMO action.
I'm tired of typing...
