You think so, eh? To date the longest accurate sniper shot made is somewhere in the ballpark of 1200 yards. And even that shot couldn't be duplicated. And unless the speed score changes dramatically in the d20 crossover, you're still not safe from my character at that range.

There you go mixing reality with RPG's. Considering the current world record in the mile is 3:43.13..and you're well beyond that, it's not unreasonable to assume in Rifts that a sniper could make a shot well beyond the current world record distance.

It's not a matter of human ability to make an accurate shot farther than that... It's a matter of getting the bullet to travel that distance accurately. To do it you'd have to elongate the barrel (say around a foot or two) and thicken it to withstand the extra propellant needed to make the bullet travel faster AND the friction created by this. It's not, currently, impossible... Just not practical. The rifle would weigh too much to be lugged around a battlefield. Unless of course there are railguns in this game, then it's absolutely feasible, and practical. You see railguns, theoretically speaking, accelerate a projectile thru the use of electromagnetism travelling along two rails (hence the name railgun). Seeing as how the projectile never touches the rails, there is no friction what-so-ever and no need for an actual barrel which allows the projectile to be accelerated extremely fast. I say projectile, instead of bullet, because railguns can fire any material, so long as it can fit between the rails and can withstand the acceleration (and is, preferably, aerodynamic). So, theoretically, it could 'fire' a toothpick at sub-sonic speeds across a country, or into space. NASA was looking into using rail 'gun' technology to accelerate ships away from earth to reach far away planets faster, but I think they scrapped the research finding the energy consumption to high to be practical. Here's a quick little-known fact for you... The word 'decelerate' is slang. It was never truely a word. We think the word 'accelerate' to mean to speed up from one velocity to another, when in fact it mean to change the velocity of. Which means even when you slow down, you are, in fact, accelerating. I found this out in 9th grade. It was printed in my algebra book, of all places. And before anyone pops up saying "it's not slang, it's in the dictionary." 'Ain't' is slang and it's in the dictionary, as well.

Now you're comparing sci-fi with modern science. Yes, I would accept that in modern science a shot at that distance would be near impossible, however, Rifts doesn't exactly work on a modern science level. Yes, there are rail guns, and energy guns, and slug throwers, and lasers etc etc. And the creatures of the Rifts world (especially military ones) have extra-ordinary abilities...including aim, most of the time.
P.S.- Decceleration is a word used gramatically correct. However, in Physics, only the term acceleration" is used. A decrease in acelleration is just referred to as "negative acceleration" since the object is still technically in motion. Even backwards movement is considered acceleration. The problem with acceleration comes when objects begin to reach light speed. We just don't know what would happen to mass at that speed and if it would return to normal once we deccelerate from lightspeed.

You two, are utter geeks....and way worse than me. You two are arguing wheather or not heaven needs to help the person he is aiming at, just wait for the damn game to be played fattys. Then he can boost about his ungodly sniper shots, so long as he takes out the "monsters" he can shoot them as far as the moon for all our party cares ;D
