I want to start running a Rifts campaign. I can't decide though if I want to do it over AIM or actual PnP. I know I could probably get a regular Saturday game going with Seph, Cloud, Biogeek and whoever. Even with just 3 players that's enough for a Rifts game.
What is Rifts?
Imagine about 100 years in the future, these things called Ley Lines appear in the sky above earth. Lines of blue energy, dim in some parts, but bright enough in others to read a book by. The lines are some kind of extra-dimensional energy, and around the time they appear, the Earth is wracked with storms, earthquakes, tornados, tidal waves, and every other natural disaster you can think of. The combining disasters stike and devastate the planet in a number of hours. Billions of people die almost instantly. Their deaths only seem to fuel the power of the Ley Lines, causing extra-dimensional portals to open up at Ley Line intersections. Out of the portals pour all kinds of horrific demons and monsters. Some, like Dinosaurs, come from our past, others, like Dragons, from our fairy tales, while others are so horrific that they're more akin to demons from hell than anything else. Couple this with new and rare plagues and it's a miracle mankind survived what is now referred to as "The New Dark Age."
Fast forward another 300 years in the future. The Rifts no longer occur at every Ley Line intersection (though they are more likely to appear there than anywhere else), and for the most part only a few Rifts remain open constantly. Mankind has huddled into new cities...though MUCH smaller than any city of the past, and are more akin to military bases on the outside. Mechs defend the cities and fight for the new governments against waves of unorganized monsters. Everything from werewolves and vampires, to dragons and demons of hell, control territories around the world.
So...what are you?
Now here comes the beauty of Rifts. There's TONS of character types to play, and a nearly endless character customization system. You can play anything from a Juicer (human who has been chemically agumented to be faster, stronger and better than any normal human...but at the cost of a shorter life span), to a Cyborg (a human who has traded in nearly 90% of his original body for metallic replacements and weapons), to a Dragon Hatchling (yes the kind that blow fire...they're intelligent and some even help mankind), to a Mech pilot (Jovain Chronicles style). There's even room for and werewolf characters (though I'd have to dig up the rules). This game mixes them all.
What do you guys think? I'm still reading through the rules (I have the books in pdf format), and when you decide, we can get together and make characters one night.
