What is ECL?
ECL stands for "Effective Character Level." Basically, that's a fancy way of saying that your character is more powerful than most characters that are equal to your level (usually because of subrace bonuses), so that means you'll have to be balanced in another way.
How does ECL affect me?
It doesn't if you didn't choose a subrace. If you DID pick a subrace, however, you're character is most likely going to have an ECL. Basically, that ECL will increase the amount of XP your character needs to level.
How this works exactly is like this:
Say your character has an ECL of 2. Basically when he levels up, the system will reset him back to 1/2 of the XP on his old level. Once the character gains that XP back, and levels again, he'll get to keep his level. A character with an ECL of 3 would be set back to 1/3 of the XP from his previous level, etc.
